What is the IELTS test?

IELTS logo
  • The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS, is a test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers.
  • It is jointly owned by the British Council; IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment and has become one of the most trusted forms of English language assessment globally.
  • IELTS is designed to assess English language skills across a wide range of levels. Results are reported as band scores on a scale from 1 (the lowest) to 9 (the highest).

What are the two types of IELTS test?

  • Academic IELTS is for international students who would like to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels at an English-speaking higher education institute, and for those seeking professional registration
  • General IELTS focuses on English survival skills and social and workplace language, and is aimed at those who are hoping to move to an English-speaking country, such as the United Kingdom, or wish to train or study at below degree level

What are the different parts of the IELTS Test?

  • Whether you are taking Academic IELTS or General IELTS you will be tested on all four language skills — listening, reading, writing and speaking.
  • The Listening, Reading and Writing tests must be completed on the same day, although the order in which these tests are taken may vary. There are no breaks between these three tests. The Speaking test may be taken up to seven days before or after the other three tests.
  • Everyone takes the same Listening and Speaking test, however there are different Reading and Writing tests for IELTS Academic and General Training.
