Planning for a double major in Computer Science and Game Development

Polina is currently studying with us at UWO Fox Cities. Here, she shares details of her transfer offers so far, and details of where she hopes her undergraduate studies will lead her.

Hi Polina. Which Kings school are you studying at and what are you studying?

I’m studying at UWO, Fox Cities, and I’m studying Computer Science.

What made you pursue a college degree in the United States?

I studied English from a young age, and when I was in high school I was a foreign exchange student. I really liked the high school experience, and I thought the college experience would be similar.

What major are you interested in, and why?

"I’m in Computer Science, and I will likely transfer to be a game developer. I’d like to double-major in Computer Science and Game Development. I like problem-solving, and I enjoy seeing problems for a few hours and then solving them."

What are your plans after graduation?

I would like to become a game programmer. I’m not great at drawing, but I’m good at coding. So, I think this is a good being a game programmer. Most likely, I’ll work for a few years and then do a Master’s degree.

Why did you choose to study at Kings at UWO, Fox Cities?

I went to UWO, Fox Cities because it had courses in Computer Science. I choose Kings because they have advisors, which I believed would help me in a foreign country.

What is your favorite class, why do you like it? What class do you find more challenging?

Objected-Oriented Programming II was my favorite. It was the first class where I started learning new things, and this was great because it’s in computer programming. I found Physics I to be most challenging because you’re supposed to work really hard in class and also work hard on your own outside of class.

Have you decided on your target schools? How did Kings staff guide you through the process?

"So far, I’ve been accepted to the University of Southern California (#24), New York University (#30), the University of Wisconsin-Madison (#42), and the University of Utah (#97). I’m still waiting to hear back from more schools. Kings Progression Advisors helped me to know the requirements at each school."

Has there been any difficulties with classes or life in general? What kind of assistance did you get from Kings staff?

When I withdrew from a class, Kings staff helped me to find a suitable class to replace it. Also, when I missed an important deadline, Kings helped me to go to the post office the same day to rush delivery of documents.

Which student activity did you enjoy the most?

I really enjoyed Computer Science Club because of the projects and getting to know about the game development process.

What is your favorite part of living in Appleton/Menasha?

I like that it’s not very busy, and it’s much cheaper than a big city.
