The Gilbert School was founded in 1895 by William L. Gilbert for the purpose of providing instruction “for the improvement of mankind by affording such assistance and means of educating the young as will help them to become good citizens.”
Today, that spirit of good citizenship and educating the whole child endures. The School moved to its present site in 1959 in Winsted, Connecticut and is today a comprehensive independent middle-senior high school for grades 7 – 12.
Set in the picturesque Litchfield Hills of Northwestern Connecticut, many prestigious institutions of higher learning are easily accessible.
International students join the Diploma program and benefit from the expert counselling and specialist tuition provided to non-native English speakers.

The Dean of Student Affairs carefully screens all of the Residential Coordinators for the male residency hall and female dorm home. They are all caring, friendly individuals interested in supporting students in their education and also in sharing their cultural background. They provide a safe and stable environment in which students study, eat, sleep and spend time with traditional American supervisors.
