Founded in 1754 as King’s College by Royal Charter of King George II of England, Columbia is the oldest university in the state of New York and one of the oldest in the US. It is a member of the prestigious Ivy League and its main campus is located in the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City.

About the university

Columbia University has three undergraduate schools – Columbia College, The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science and the School of General Studies. It also has a number of graduate and professional schools, including the highly ranked Business School, Law School and College of Physicians and Surgeons. It also has a well-regarded College of Dental Medicine and graduate Journalism School.

  • In addition to its main Broadway campus, Columbia has two facilities outside Manhattan: Nevis Laboratories, a centre in Irvington for the study of high-energy experimental particle and nuclear physics and the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades.
  • The university has 20 schools, including Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Business and Law . It also has 23 libraries at various locations across the city.
  • Over 80 esteemed individuals from Columbia University have been awarded the prestigious Nobel prize. Among them are chemist Robert Lefkowitz, economist Joseph Stiglitz, and former US President Barack Obama, who received the Peace Prize in 2009.
