From Setback to the Ivy League: A South Korean student’s journey to the Top U.S. Universities

For many international students, the path to a dream university isn’t always linear. For one Kings student from South Korea, the journey began with academic challenges—but ended in triumph, with multiple offers from top U.S. universities, including Columbia University, an Ivy League institution ranked #13 nationally.

After struggling in high school and not meeting the requirements for top universities in South Korea, he made a bold decision: to begin anew in the U.S.

“Coming here was my last chance to get back on track,” he shared. “I wasn’t an exemplary student before, but after arriving, I devoted two full years to preparing for transfer. And now, my dreams have come true.”

With the support of Kings Student Success Advisors, he applied to seven top-tier universities—including Columbia, NYU, Boston College, Boston University, UW–Madison, University of Michigan, and Washington University in St. Louis—each known for their excellence in business. Inspired by his father, who runs a business in South Korea, he developed a strong interest in entrepreneurship and risk management early on.

“Kings helped with all the administrative work—applications, researching schools, even contacting admissions offices. That support made a big difference,” he said.

While academics came naturally, adapting to American life was more challenging. “The cultural shift was difficult at first, but I eventually adjusted. Looking back, I wish I had taken more time to enjoy the environment and experiences in Wisconsin.”

Now, with an Ivy League acceptance in hand, he reflects on how far he’s come—and how far future students can go.

“I know it’s scary—wondering if you can succeed or get into a Top 50 university. But nothing is impossible. Try your best, and the results will follow."
