The Gilbert School

The Gilbert School was founded in 1895 by William L. Gilbert for the purpose of providing instruction “for the improvement of mankind by affording such assistance and means of educating the young as will help them to become good citizens.”

Today, that spirit of good citizenship and educating the whole child endures. The School moved to its present site in 1959 in Winsted, Connecticut and is today a comprehensive independent middlesenior high school for grades 7 – 12.

Set in the picturesque Litchfield Hills of Northwestern Connecticut, many prestigious institutions of higher learning are easily accessible.

In 2018, Gilbert earned a Silver Medal in the U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools.

School location

The Gilbert School
Winsted, Connecticut, USA.

The Gilbert School offers the perfect location for younger students to begin their American journey. The local town and neighborhood offer a warm, friendly environment. International students will be able to settle in quickly and enjoy a supportive, small town experience throughout their early years in the US. Yet, once they are ready to spread their wings, our students have easy access to both New York and Boston – two of the finest cities in the US for cultural richness and academic excellence.

Programs available

Through our partnership with The Gilbert School, we offer a pathway to an elite university from one of the most respected high schools in the US.

Diploma Program (Years 9 – 12)

Gilbert’s traditional co-educational secondary program focuses on developing the whole student, including their physical, intellectual, emotional, and social growth. It utilizes the most cutting-edge methods in education, including technology.

Students study Math, Science, English, Social Studies, Art, Music, Career and Technology, Physical Education and Health and World Languages.

Gilbert has an established tradition of supporting international students and offers credit-earning specialized classes for non-native English speakers.

Each student meets regularly with an assigned counsellor who helps choose classes depending on academic background and abilities and English language level.

Study Abroad (Years 9 – 12)

This program is ideal for students who want a unique and challenging cultural experience but do not intend to graduate high school in the US. It allows students to experience one year of cultural immersion in an American high school. Students will study and live alongside fully enrolled American and international students, exposing them to both the academic challenges and social dynamics of American teenage life.

Accelerated College Degree Program (Years 11 and 12)

Students in year 11 and 12 also have the opportunity to study in the Accelerated College Degree Program (ADP), which allows students to complete up to one year of university-level education while still in high school. These classes are taken as part of the regular junior and senior year curriculum and include a variety of subjects including English, Mathematics, and Science.
