A campus-based university with its home in the city of Colchester, the University of Essex was named University of the Year at the Times Higher Education Awards 2018. The social sciences are a particular strength, with a top 40 ranking in the QS world rankings for both Politics and Sociology.

  • It holds a TEF (Teaching Excellence Framework) Gold Award. 
  • In 2018 it was in the Top 15 for the sixth year running in The National Student Survey for overall student satisfaction. 
  • The university received the only Regius professorship in political science in the awards to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee. 
  • The courses available are organised into three faculties: humanities, science and health and social science. Within these three faculties there are 20 different schools and departments.
  • Essex counts two Nobel Laureates, as well as filmmaker David Yates, author Ben Okri and architect Daniel Libeskind, as alumni.

Within the UK, Essex has top 20 rankings for the following subjects, according to the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022: American Studies (#7), Drama, Dance and Cinematics (#9), Sports Science (#14), Creative Writing (#16) and Politics (#16).
