About De Montfort
DMU has been in existence for more than 150 years, beginning in 1870 as the Leicester School of Art. It was founded to provide education and training for workers from the city’s booming industries, and was renamed in 1992 after Simon de Montfort, the 6th Earl of Leicester who founded the first representative English parliament in 1265. Unusually for a campus university, De Montfort is located in the city centre and uses both medieval and 21st-century buildings.
