Soyoung from South Korea

Soyoung joined Kings Oxford from South Korea to pursue her ambition of studying Forensic Science at university in the UK. Currently completing the Degree Pathway Programme (Foundation), she is studying Maths, Data, CSS (Communication and Study Skills), alongside Chemistry and Biology.

In this interview, she shares how she adapted academically, what makes Kings Oxford special, and why she recommends it to future science students.

Q: Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

A: Hi, I’m Soyoung from South Korea. I’m currently studying the Degree Pathway Programme at Kings Oxford. My subjects include Maths and Data, CSS, Chemistry and Biology.

I came to the UK because I want to study Forensic Science at university. I had already entered university in Korea to study Biomedical Laboratory Science, but I
realised that Forensic Science was what I truly wanted to pursue. After researching universities, I found that the UK has very strong and well-known forensic science courses, so I decided to come here.

Q: How was it adjusting to studying in a foreign language?

A: The first month was very challenging. It was my first time studying Chemistry, Biology and Maths entirely in English.

Q: What helped you to adjust to studies in English?

At first, I tried to memorise all the terminology, but it didn’t work well. Then I changed my study method. Instead of only memorising, I focused on understanding the principles and mechanisms first, and then memorising. After that, things improved a lot, and I achieved high grades. It was difficult at the beginning, but adapting my study strategy really helped me succeed.

Q: What do you like most about studying at Kings Oxford?

A: One of the things I like most is the small class sizes. In my class, there are only eight students. Because of this, I can ask questions easily and get detailed
explanations from the teacher. It’s also easier to make friends in a smaller class. The environment feels supportive and comfortable.

Q: Have you taken part in any super-curricular activities?

A: Yes, Kings offers super-curricular clubs on Wednesdays. These activities helped me and my friends to connect.

In Term 1, I joined the Inquiry Lab, where students learned how to design and ask meaningful research questions. In Term 2, I joined the Mathematics Club, where we solve creative and challenging problems. These activities are interesting and help develop skills outside the classroom.

Q: What is the science learning experience like at Kings?

A: Before each experiment, teachers give a detailed introduction and instructions. Students study the mechanisms behind the experiments and learn about safety
hazards and how to handle chemical materials properly. The experience feels interactive, collaborative and professional.

Q: Would you recommend Kings Oxford to other students?

A: Yes, I will absolutely recommend Kings Oxford to students who dream of studying science! The teachers explain everything in detail, and the practical lessons are very strong. The small class sizes, supportive environment, and high-quality teaching make it an excellent place to prepare for university.

As Soyoung will continue her journey in studying Forensic Science at university, Kings Oxford has given her both the academic foundation and the confidence to succeed in a new language and a new country.
