Bake sale at Kings Oxford

As part of the Super Curricular Programme, our Social Responsibility group – Charity Kings – recently organised a two-day charity bake sale on campus, with proceeds going to the Yellow Submarine charity.

Kings Oxford student May Pyae Sone Min tells us more about both the charity, and the event.

Yellow Submarine charity

Approximately 1.5 million people in the UK have a learning disability, with 20% to 30% of this population also having an autism diagnosis (Office of National Statistics, 2024). This means that about 1% of the general population deals with certain issues of varying degrees involving the ability to communicate, learn new skills, and understand complex information, with many more bearing the strain silently due to a lack of diagnosis.

Over the last few decades, autism and disability recognition has improved drastically, but it remains imperfect. Many individuals still struggle to find the proper support and care they need to live independently as members of society. Many individuals are not given the chance to live healthier, happier, and longer lives, as difficulties navigating healthcare systems and academic settings remain extremely prevalent to this day. For this reason, organisations such as Yellow Submarine are remarkably important.

The Yellow Submarine charity highlights the problem that many people with learning disabilities often have little to no opportunities due to leaving school without being taught the proper skills. To combat this, their programmes work with young people in community settings to develop their social skills, self-assurance, independence, and eventually their employability, as well as support their transition into adulthood. They also have cafes open to employ these adults as they begin their new lives. However, to provide better activities and training, more volunteers and donations are always needed. Due to this, our charity club at Kings, Oxford joined together to raise funds for Yellow Submarine.

The bake sale

The group assembled to host a bake sale on 7th and 8th of October 2025. The sale included an assortment of cakes, brownies, and a variety of drinks, all handmade together with a lot of care.

We raised £172.90, with all the proceeds going towards ensuring that Yellow Submarine is better equipped and funded. We were delighted to contribute as much as we can to support those with learning disabilities, and we hope to partner with Yellow Submarine again for the future.
