I hope university feels as memorable as my time at Kings

Helia from Iran

Helia joined Kings from Iran to study A-levels, initially planning to follow a science pathway. But during her first year, something changed. After discovering a passion for Economics, she decided to switch to the Degree Pathway Programme (Foundation) and reshape her academic future.

Now preparing to apply for Business Analytics at UK universities, Helia reflects on changing direction, adjusting to a new education system, and how Kings supported her along the way.

Q: Why did you decide to change from A-levels to Degree Pathway Programme?

A: Last year I was studying Physics, but I realised my interests had changed. I discovered that I was much more interested in Economics and Business than science. So I decided to switch pathways and replace Physics with Business.

It was a big decision, but it felt like the right one for me and my future.

Q: When did you realise business was the right direction for you?

A: I studied Economics for the first time at Kings — and I honestly fell in love with the subject. I had never studied it before. The subject itself was fascinating, and having a very good teacher made a huge difference.

What I really enjoy is that everything we learn can be applied to real-world situations. You might read something in the news, and then discuss it in your next Economics lesson. It makes learning feel relevant and connected to reality.

Q: How has Kings supported you during this journey?

A: Kings is really nice — there’s always someone you can talk to, whether it’s about academics or something else. The teachers are very caring, and you can always ask for help.

Changing countries and education systems can be challenging, especially at the beginning. The language difference can affect your first term, and everything feels new. But over time, you adjust, your studies improve, and you grow more confident.

Q: How have the university fairs helped you?

A: The university fairs at Kings have been very helpful, especially this year now that I’m preparing to apply. You can meet representatives face-to-face, ask questions, and collect useful information directly from them.

Websites can sometimes feel overwhelming or confusing, but having real conversations makes everything clearer. It’s much easier to understand your options and feel confident about your choices.

Q: What are your future goals?

A: I’m hoping to study Business Analytics at university. It’s a specialised course, so not many universities offer it, which makes choosing carefully very important.

In the future, I like the idea of working in consulting or even building something of my own one day. What I like about Business Analytics is that it combines data and business, and it can be applied in many different sectors — from healthcare to education to private companies.

Q: What advice would you give to other international students coming to the UK?

Academically, the beginning can be tough. But don’t worry — it gets better. You adjust to the language, the system, and the style of studying. Practising past papers helps a lot.

And always have an umbrella!

As Helia looks ahead to university in 2026, she hopes her next chapter will be just as memorable and meaningful as her time at Kings — a place where she not only studied, but discovered her true direction.
