Niousha from Iran

Today we were delighted to welcome back Kings Bournemouth alumna Niousha, who stopped by to visit her teachers and a friend who has just joined the school on her recommendation. She kindly gave us some of her time to share an update on her university studies, her experiences at Kings, and her future plans.

Q: So Niousha, where are you studying now and what is your subject?

A: I’m studying Pharmacology at the University of East London, and I’m currently in my fifth level of study.

Q: What did you need in order to progress to university?

A: I studied at Kings for two years and completed my A-levels in Biology, Maths, and Chemistry to gain entry into university.

Another big factor was the work experience I gained in the Welfare office at Kings Bournemouth. I worked as an officer, supporting students with safeguarding and monitoring medical issues. This helped me develop important soft skills and build a strong portfolio.

It was especially meaningful after I went through surgery following a car accident, when I had to re-learn how to walk. Kings supported me during this time and offered me a role in Welfare, which gave me a sense of purpose. Instead of falling into depression, I felt useful and valued, helping other students. I also gained access to safeguarding training platforms such as EduCare, where I earned certificates that strengthened my university application.

Q: That’s very inspiring. How has this experience shaped you as a person?

A: By the time I got to university, I was really motivated to get involved. At Kings, I had learned to feel confident about myself and my direction. Now, I’m a member of the British Pharmacological Society as well as the Pharmacology Society at the University of East London.

This October, I’ll be presenting my work from a Short Placement Module I completed at a medical centre. I am also monitoring students this year, supporting them in labs during lessons. Both experiences are giving me valuable, hands-on knowledge that will help me when I apply for jobs in the future.

Q: Do you have any dream placements or career goals?

A: Yes, I’d love to work with companies like Pfizer or GSK, as those are my dream career pathways. I also have a strong passion for oncology research, which is a very important field for me. In fact, I’ll be running in October to raise funds for a Cancer Research organisation in London.

Q: Looking back at your time at Kings, what stands out the most?

A: Definitely the support I received — both academically and personally. As an international student, that made all the difference. After my accident, Kings gave me opportunities that helped me feel confident, needed, and able to support others. I’m very grateful for that.

Q: Finally, what advice would you give to other students?

A: Never be afraid to ask questions or seek advice from teachers. That’s exactly why they are there, and they are always happy to help.
