From Nigeria to the UK: Oluwanifemi’s A-level Journey at Kings
Oluwanifemi joined Kings from Lagos, Nigeria and is currently studying A-levels in Maths, Business and Physics. With ambitions to study Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at a leading UK university, he is building a strong academic foundation while adjusting to life and learning in a new country.
In this interview, Oluwanifemi shares how studying in English has helped him academically, how he settled into life at Kings, and his plans for the future.
How has studying in English helped you in your classes?
Since English is a language I’m confident with, it makes it easier for me to ask questions when I don’t understand something. If I’m confused about a topic, I can communicate with my teachers and ask for clarification. That’s a big advantage, especially for subjects like Physics. Being able to communicate clearly helps you understand the material better and stay engaged in class.
How supportive are the teachers at Kings?
The teachers really encourage you to ask questions. If you don’t understand something during class, you can always ask later as well. They’re very open and available to talk. You can go to them after lessons and have a chat about anything you’re unsure about, and they help you without criticism. That support makes it easier to improve and keep learning.
How was it settling in when you first arrived?
At first, I met another Nigerian student, which helped a lot. When you meet someone from the same country, it’s easier to connect and feel comfortable. After that, it became easier to meet other people. Everyone here is very welcoming and accommodating. You can talk to people, ask for help, and gradually build friendships. It doesn’t happen all at once, but over time you create a good group of friends.
What are your future goals?
I want to study Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence at university. My goal is to apply to universities such as King’s College London, UCL and the University of Birmingham.
Which places would you recommend going to in Oxford?
There’s a cinema called Grand View Cinema that has a really nice arcade. It’s a great place to relax and have fun, so I would definitely recommend visiting it.
Oluwanifemi's journey shows how determination, support from teachers, and a welcoming community can help students adapt and succeed in a new environment.
