Students taking part in the City Nature Challenge (CNC)

Last Friday, Kings Brighton students joined Hanover Action to take part in the global City Nature Challenge (CNC).

The City Nature Challenge is a four-day global event focused on recording urban wildlife. Using iNaturalist, participants document plants, animals, and fungi in their local area. Now in its 11th year (2026), it has grown into a worldwide movement.

Students explored local green spaces with guidance from Hanover Action, gaining hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of their environment. During the event, they:

  • Learned to identify plants, insects, and birds
  • Discovered local ecosystems up close
  • Built observation and fieldwork skills

Beyond the immediate experience, the significance of the City Nature Challenge lies in its contribution to real-world science. Every observation uploaded to iNaturalist becomes part of a global biodiversity dataset. This information is used by researchers, conservationists, land managers, and policymakers to better understand environmental changes, track species populations, and develop strategies to protect ecosystems worldwide.

It was a fun, practical day outdoors—giving students the chance to connect with nature, meet others, and contribute to a global effort. We look forward to even more Kings students taking part in future challenges.
