Hana joined Kings Brighton from Iran and is currently in her second year of A-levels, studying Psychology, History and Sociology. After previously visiting the UK, she decided to return for her studies, drawn by the culture, environment and internationally recognised qualifications.
Now preparing for university applications, Hana reflects on settling into life in Brighton, finding her academic passion, and the support she has received along the way.
Hi Hana. Why did you choose A-levels?
"I chose A-levels because they are internationally recognised. I felt that having an A-level qualification would be very beneficial for my future and would give me strong academic opportunities worldwide."
Why did you decide to study in the UK?
"I had visited England before and really enjoyed my time here. I liked the environment and the culture, and it felt like the right place for me. It’s also relatively close to my home country, which made it feel like a comfortable and practical choice."
Why Brighton?
"Some of my friends had studied here before and recommended it to me. My family also knew about the school, so it felt like a trusted choice.
Brighton is a great city, especially if it’s your first time in the UK. It’s small enough that it’s not overwhelming, but it still has so much to offer. There are always activities and things to do. It’s a really good place to start and to get used to British culture without the intensity of a bigger city like London."
How was it settling in during your first year?
"At first, it was definitely challenging. It’s a new environment, new people, and even a new language. It can feel overwhelming in the beginning. But as time went on, I met new people, explored the city more, and started interacting with others. That really helped me settle in. I think the best way to adjust is to step out of your comfort zone and try to meet as many people as you can. The friendships you build are what really help you adapt to a new culture and environment."
What is your favourite subject?
"Psychology is definitely my favourite. It has always been my passion, and I find the topics really interesting and fun to learn about. I love all my teachers, but psychology especially stands out because I genuinely enjoy the subject so much."
How has Kings supported you with university preparation?
"The university fair at Kings Brighton was a really good opportunity to speak directly with different universities and learn more about them. It made me feel more confident about the universities I’m planning to apply to. Throughout the application process, Kings has been very supportive. I never felt like I was left alone or unsure about what to do. The staff guided me through everything step by step, and I always felt supported."
What are your university goals?
"I would like to study Psychology at university. My dream university is King’s College London because it’s one of the top universities in the UK for psychology. Their programme offers strong support and excellent resources for students, which would be incredibly beneficial for me."
What advice would you give to new students joining Kings?
"My main advice would be: get out of your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to approach people and start conversations. Once you do, you’ll meet amazing people and build great friendships. Also, try to stay motivated and patient with yourself while you adjust to the new city and system. It might feel overwhelming at first, but it does get better."
As Hana prepares for the next chapter of her academic journey, her time at Kings Brighton has given her not only strong academic foundations, but also confidence, friendships and clarity about her future ambitions.
