  • Engineering degrees encompass a wide variety of subjects but are united by their focus on developing the skills needed to design, maintain and improve various types of structure and system.
  • There are four broad streams of engineering: civil, mechanical engineering, electrical and chemical.

Engineering in the UK

  • Today, companies like McLaren Racing, Dyson, Rolls-Royce, Bowers & Wilkins, showcase the country’s excellence in engineering.
  • According to the Engineering UK 2018 report by EngineeringUK, 19% of the UK total workforce are employed in the engineering sector, and in 2015-16 engineering generated 23% (£1.23 trillion) of the UK’s total turnover.
  • The report also highlighted an estimated annual shortfall of up to 59,000 engineering graduates and technicians to fill core engineering roles.

A history of success and innovation

  • The UK is where the Industrial Revolution began. The transition from hand production to machines meant a new level of research and invention — this marked the beginning of modern engineering.
  • George Stephenson, Michael Faraday, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, John Logie Baird, Tim Berners-Lee are only some of the great British engineers and inventors who contributed to world engineering.

Globally recognised universities

  • UK universities have an excellent global reputation for their Engineering programmes.
  • The Times Higher Education world university rankings 2024 placed the University of Oxford 4th globally for Engineering and Technology,  the University of Cambridge 5th and Imperial College London 10th.
