One of the most memorable experiences for international students studying English in Oxford is climbing the tower of the University Church of St. Mary the Virgin, often referred to as St. Mary’s Tower. This historic church, located right in the heart of the city on the High Street, is a landmark not just for its beauty but also for its incredible views and cultural significance.
The activity begins with a walk through the church itself, which has been a centre of university life for centuries. Students admired the Gothic architecture, the tall stained-glass windows, and the atmosphere that connects directly with Oxford’s long academic tradition. It is the perfect setting for students who are learning English and want to expand their understanding of the University as well as city’s rich history.
The real adventure started when you embark on the climb up the narrow stone staircase that spirals up the tower. The climb is steep and a little challenging, but well worth it for the spectacular views at the top!
Once at the top, students are rewarded with one of the best panoramic views in Oxford. From this high point, you can see the Radcliffe Camera, the Bodleian Library, the Sheldonian Theatre, and many of the university’s famous colleges. It’s a perfect opportunity for students to simply observe the city and take in all its beauty, from such a high vantage point.
A visit to St. Mary’s Tower combines history, culture, language practice, as well as of course fun! We look forward to many more trips up the tower for future students to enjoy and experience!
