Transferring to Iowa State to major in Architecture

Khuan Leyva Garsiya completed the University Preparation Program with Kings in New York and recently finished his freshman year at Concordia College. We caught up with him to find out more about his future plans.

Hi Khuan. Where are you from and why did you decide to come to study in the US?

I am from Ukraine. Studying in the US was my childhood dream. I have wanted to study abroad for a long time because the US has the best schools, the best programs and the best educational system for me.

What did you like about studying with Kings? What did you like about Concordia?

The setting in Kings taught me a lot. The thing I liked most was the basic skills I learned: academic writing, necessary grammar for writing essays, etc. In many classes, I learned how to do research, presentations, and how to analyze some difficult topics.

Concordia is a real college where everything becomes real to you. Basically, its Liberal Arts program was helpful to me. We need these courses not only to transfer, but they helped me transform myself.

How did your Concordia courses help you increase your academic skills?

There were some courses I took, including last semester that helped change me as a student. They increased my academic skills, so that was good. Art classes also helped me on my way to practicing architecture and I earned necessary credits for transfer. Concordia had a big impact on me.

What is your major? What do you like about it?

My major right now is Business Administration, but really I entered the school as undecided. I am about to transfer to study Architecture. I like Architecture because although it may not be a popular major, it is a very important job for the modern world. It lets me express myself, help people and improve society at the same time.

Where are you going to transfer and why?

I am going to transfer to Iowa State University because it’s one of the choices that was best for me considering my GPA and all my records. It was also kind of my dream school, since it has good sports programs. It will be very interesting to study there.

How did Kings help you with your transfer applications?

Everything that I had doubts about in the application process, my advisor helped me with. Kings helped me to take care of all the steps of the application. It was also helpful to have someone to help review the required documents for transfer, because these are a little bit confusing. It was the perfect time for me, because without it, I would have spent more time figuring it out on my own. It was also helpful to learn how to choose a school and determine which program was best for me.

Any words of advice to other students who want to study in the US?

First, don’t be afraid to ask for any help—look for a person who is qualified to help you. Also, don’t wait until the last minute with everything you need to do apply for university. Also, work on your academics. Manage your time in everything!
