How to prepare for the TOEFL exam
TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language and, along with IELTS, is one of the two most popular standardized tests of English proficiency globally.
Both are accepted by a large number of organizations in English-speaking and non-English-speaking countries around the world. They are often required for internships and universities and schools, and are used to prove applicants’ level of English in all four linguistic skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking.
The TOEFL iBT (internet-Based Test) is the most common type of TOEFL test and takes place online.
In this article, we look at how to prepare for the test, how it is scored, as well as specifics around where you can take the TOEFL test in New York, and how to register to do so.
Where to take the TOEFL exam in NYC
As a standardized test, if you wish to take the TOEFL test in-person, in a traditional test environment (rather than TOEFL iBT Home Edition), it must be taken at an approved testing center.
There are many in New York City, most of which are located in language schools or colleges and universities. They provide a comfortable and secure testing environment, offering a range of facilities and services to ensure that your testing experience is stress-free.
Whether you are a resident of NYC or visiting the city for a short time, you will be able to find a convenient location to take the TOEFL exam. While the majority of testing centers in the New York area are in Manhattan, there are also locations in the other four boroughs of the city: Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island.
By visiting the ETS website, you are able to look up potential testing venues in your chosen area (such New York) according to your preferred dates.
How to Register for the TOEFL Exam in NYC
The only way to register to take the TOEFL iBT is via the ETS website. The online platform lets you sign up for the test depending on availability, so it’s always a good idea to register early.
- You’ll be required to create an account using your email address (or to sign in if you already have an account), and then you can select your preferred location and date.
- Sessions will be displayed depending on availability. You’ll need to pay the fee securely online with a credit card in order to complete your registration.
- It is also possible to register with ETS via telephone or by mail.
On the website, you’ll also be able to find information you need about the format of the TOEFL test, sample exercises to familiarize yourself with the content, current TOEFL iBT fees, and planned testing dates in your area.
How Much Does the TOEFL Test Cost?
To book a test slot, you will have to make a one-off registration payment. This fee differs slightly from place to place, but in NYC currently stands at $225 (USD).
How Is the TOEFL Scored?
The score range is 0–30 for each of the four sections of the TOEFL iBT test (Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing). These are added together for a total score of 0–120.
Each skill has four or five proficiency levels, so where your score falls within that range tells you your proficiency for that skill (Advanced, High-Intermediate, Low-Intermediate or Below Low-Intermediate)
Your TOEFL score reports are sent to your designated recipients approximately 4–16 business days after your test date, depending on their chosen delivery method.
How to Prepare for the TOEFL Exam
Once you register to take the test, the only thing left to do is to prepare for it!
Success in the test depends not only on English language ability, but also on familiarity with the test format, components and assessment criteria.
The language used in the TOEFL test closely reflects how English is used in everyday academic settings; the test content is based entirely on academic English, with integrated tasks.
The TOEFL test has 4 sections - Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. You’ll be asked to complete tasks that combine these 4 communication skills.
Doing practice tests is essential preparation for the exam, and it’s also a good idea to use study materials such as textbooks, online courses, and vocabulary apps to help hone language skills and improve overall comprehension.
Arguably the best way to prepare for the TOEFL iBT exam, though, is to take a dedicated test preparation course with specialist TOEFL teachers.
By taking a TOEFL preparation course, such as those offered at Kings New York, you will be helped to:
- Work under exam conditions and hone your test-taking strategies
- Understand what is expected in each of the 4 sections of the test: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing
- Plan and review your answers to test questions
- Prepare mentally for exam day
- Manage your time through practice tests
