Taking TOEFL and English For Fashion, Art & Design in New York
Vitoria Becker Duarte de Souza is from Brazil, and has been studying for two months at Kings New York on the English For Fashion, Art and Design and TOEFL courses. She tells us why her lessons have been useful, and about life on an American college campus.
Hi Vitoria. Can you tell us a bit about where you're from?
I'm from the South of Brazil, a little city called Blumenau. It is the capital of beer in Brazil. We even celebrate Octoberfest. It was a city colonized by Germans that's why I don’t look like I'm from Brazil. I have a German family who were immigrants from Germany.
What courses have you taken at Kings New York and what have they been like?
I took English for Fashion, Art and Design for my first 4-weeks at Kings New York, and then TOEFL iBT for my last 4 weeks.
I really liked the English for Fashion, Art and Design course because I was able to learn vocabulary in my field, which is fashion. It was really nice having a small class and Suzi, our teacher, was very dedicated to us.
TOEFL iBT course was great because my teacher, Stella, made it easier for me. She really knew how to help me and taught me what I needed to learn.
What made you choose these courses?
I went to the agency and told them I was studying fashion, so they presented this course to me. For TOEFL, I am planning to attend college in the US so for that I needed to prepare for the TOEFL test.
What do you enjoy the most and what do you find challenging in your exam class?
I think I enjoy the teaching methods and templates the teachers use — specific tips for making things easier. The challenging part was working on timed exercises and meeting deadlines.
Where are you staying?
I live in Bohm Hall [on-campus residence]. I really liked living in the dorm because it's like in the movies. The challenging part of living in the dormitory was that my neighbour sang opera and she often practiced at night, sometimes at 11pm! But my Resident Assistant was very nice and caring.
Have you taken part in any of the extracurricular activities outside of English classes?
I went to the FIT museum, MOMA, and the MET. I love going to the museums so I enjoyed this experience. I went to the campus gym as well for exercising.
Where are your classmates from?
Panama, Mexico, Brazil, South Korea and Netherlands.
What do you think of the school's location at Concordia College?
I think it's a nice location. It was easy to go to New York. I wish some of the stores (like CVS) were a bit closer even though they are at a walking distance from campus.
What has been your best memory of your time here?
It was the first day that it started snowing. I looked out the window and screamed at my roommate, "Paloma, look! There's snow, Paloma!"
What would you say to anyone considering coming to Kings to study?
I think that this person would not regret it.
