Taking time out for self-care projects
In today's society it's very easy to lose yourself in all the hustle and bustle, especially if you are a student — you are always busy with school work preparing for classes, assignments, exams, presentations, club activities, competing for internship opportunities, and all things in between.
It's especially hard when you are an international student because you are doing all the work in second language, and we are always trying to please others — whether it be family, teachers and professors, or friends. We forget that in order to be able to succeed we need to take care of ourselves and our health.
Kings at UW–Fox Valley organized a couple of Do-It-Yourself (DIY) relaxation and craft activities, to allow students to take time out from their hectic day, sit down together and make something for themselves.
First, customized DIY pampering, where students were able to make their own lip scrub, body scrub or bath salts to their own preference. Lip scrub was made by mixing sugar and honey together; body scrub was made using Epsom salts, shea butter and essential oils. Students could choose from:
- Lavender, for calming and stress relief
- Lemon, for detoxing and de-stressing
- Eucalyptus, to help wellness, and with colds and muscle pain
It was a quick and easy DIY project, but students were able to relax and enjoy their time, and forget their daily stress for a few minutes.
We also held a lunchtime craft activity, painting mugs for ourselves or as gifts. The students were given a plain white mug, pencil to draw a pattern and oil-based Sharpies to color it. The students could paint whatever they wanted on the mug — some drew their country's flag, others drew cartoon characters or inspirational quotes.
When they were finished, Kayla took the mugs home to bake them in the oven, to fix the paint so it won't come off when the mugs are washed.
As we were doing these DIY projects, we learned that self-care is important and it's not always selfish to think about yourself before others.
A few other ways you can take care of yourself are taking a walk in nature, working out, stretching, yoga, meditation, playing sports you love, nourishing your body with healthy foods, traveling, taking time at the end of the day to reflect upon yourself and being thankful, being with people that help you better yourself, and throwing out the negativity in your life.
We hope this year everyone can take better care of themselves and be happy, healthy and successful in whatever they set their minds to!
