Taking the English Plus Law course at Kings London | Laura from Brazil

Laura Ferraz Silva, from Brazil, has been studying at Kings London for 5 months on the English Plus Law course. She tells us about her reasons for coming to Kings London and how her experience in the UK has exceeded her expectations.

What is your name and where are you from?

My name is Laura Ferraz Silva, I’m 19 years old, and I’m from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

What course have you been taking?

I took the English Plus Law course. In the morning, we had general English, so we could learn a lot about grammar, vocabulary and different topics. In the afternoon class, we’ve learned a lot of legal vocabulary and also have the civil system in the UK works. It was really interesting.

Do you have a favourite educational visit that you’ve been on?

I think the Supreme Court visit was great. The building was so nice - it was the first one and I thought it was really cool when we witnessed a case. It was about murder, and it was really interesting. I was impacted because it was so different from Brazil, in the way that the trial takes place and the lawyers work.

Why did you decide to take this course? Do you have future plans which require English skills?

Actually I came here to improve my English to find a good job in Brazil. I’m studying Law in Brazil so the vocabulary would be useful and important for me, so that’s why I came here.

What made you choose Kings London?

I looked at a lot of schools in Brazil and I thought that this one was good because of the Law courses, and also because I knew that there would be people from all around the world here which was nice. Also I wanted to come to London.

What do you think about the school facilities?

I think that the technology is really good, and the teachers are always available and always want to help you. It’s really good.

Have you taken part in any excursions or activities with Kings?

Yes, in the first month I went to a lot of the afternoon activities in Central London and it was really nice. We went to Harrods, Greenwich, South Bank, and also Borough Market. It was really nice because in the beginning everything was new, so it was good to go with someone that knows the way any everything!

Have you discovered any good places to shop, eat or explore whilst you’ve been in London?

I love Borough Market - there’s a lot of food from all around the world, I love it so much! I went to Richmond which was nice, and also South Kensington. I also love South Bank, and bank side with the Tate Modern.

Was this your first visit to the UK?

No - I’ve been here last year, but I only stayed for 3 days.

Was it how you expected?

No, I think it was better than I expected! It was different. I was expecting to learn a lot, but I didn’t expect to know so many people and to interact with people from all around the world, and to be so independent. I think it was surprising for me. I didn’t expect to make so many friends.

Would you recommend London to other students?

Yes, and I think a good thing about living here in Beckenham is that we don’t have a lot of people from Brazil so it’s nice because if I go to central London I hear Portuguese everywhere, so I need to use my English more which is really nice as I need to practice more!
