Studying online from Myanmar to complete my A-levels

Wai Yan Phyo (Richard), from Myanmar, is currently preparing for A-levels with Kings. He studied in person with us in Oxford for first half of the last academic year but has been learning online from Myanmar since the pandemic hit.

He has already obtained good grades in Maths and Chinese (Mandarin) and is taking Physics and Further Maths alongside academic English lessons this year.

Hi Richard. How has your experience of studying online been so far?

Well, it’s pretty ok but I personally like face-to-face lessons better.

What are the positives of learning online? What are the challenges?

The good thing about studying online is that you get to be with your family at home. What’s challenging is that you may not be able to absorb 100% of the lesson, and you can’t be with your friends too.

Do you feel supported by the teachers and staff at Kings Oxford?

Sure, absolutely!

Have you started thinking about your university applications yet? Have you met with your Kings UCAS Counsellor?

Yes.

"I have already sent my UCAS application. I have decided to apply for Imperial College London, UCL, King’s College London, University of Manchester and the University or Southampton."

The decision to apply to these universities is mostly because of their ranking and my mom wanted me to study in London only, cause she said I can explore many new things in big city. Personally, I like Manchester as I am a fan of the Premier League!

Do you know what subject you would like to study at university yet? Why did you choose this subject?

Yes, Computer Science. I have always wanted to know how computers work and how they play significant roles in our society. As Bill Gates once said, the demand for computer scientists is increasing dramatically.

I personally love coding too. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I have learned some language using websites such as Freecodecamp and W3school .

Are you planning to travel to the UK to continue your studies in-person in 2021?

Hopefully when the Covid-19 pandemic is over. Actually, I want to come back now but my mom will kill me if I do that! In March I might be back.

Would you recommend Kings Oxford as a school for other students?

I would recommend Kings Oxford to other students. It’s fun and a peaceful place to study and live.
