Studying Business at UW Oshkosh Fox Cities
Victor Falcon, from Panama is currently studying at Kings at University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Fox Cities. He joined the GO:Prepared program in January 2019 and started the GO: 50 program in Fall 2019 semester. We spoke with Victor about his experience as a GO:50 student:
Which Kings school are you studying at and what are you studying?
I arrived in Wisconsin in January, and I took GO: Prepared classes until April. Then I took Summer classes and that helped me prepare for the Fall start. I’m interested in studying Business, especially International Business with marketing.
What made you pursue a college degree in America?
I am originally from Panama. I have a family furniture business there and I want to improve the business. Here in the US, in my opinion, education is better than my home country.
What are your plans after graduation?
For now, it seems like a long way because I’m a freshman. I would like to work after graduating with my international business degree. Maybe in the future, it would be great to start an office here in the US to have a relationship with our family business back home.
Why did you choose to study at Kings at UW Oshkosh Fox Cities?
Wisconsin is one of the places I have never visited before. I’ve been to Los Angeles and Boston. The fact that I’ll be in a new city surrounded by new people and new environment also helped. Another reason was that I would be part of guaranteed transfer program to UW–Madison.
What is your favorite class, why do you like it? What class do you find more challenging? Why is that?
Math. I’m taking MATH 103, and the professor puts a lot of pressure on us. He goes very fast and I like to be busy. For me, I prefer the class to be fast-paced because otherwise I can get lazy.
WBIS is the most challenging class for me. It has lots of writing and since English isn’t my first language, classes can be difficult.
Which student activity did you enjoy the most?
I’m part of the school soccer team. We have our first game of the season in two weeks.
Have you decided on your target schools?
Besides Madison, I would like to study at Michigan State University, University of Michigan–Ann Arbor and University of Georgia.
Is there anything you wish you would’ve prepared before starting school?
I really like this question. From my own experience, I never thought English was going to be important in my life. It’s important to learn another language and I never thought about it until I was already in junior year of high school. Many students in Panama don’t realize the importance of English but I would like to let them know how important it is for your future.
I also would recommend Kings for the first couple of years, Kings staff really helped me with my mindset, adjusting to school and life here. Each Kings staff work in different areas but they work together so it’s easier for us to just visit Kings office whenever we need help.
