Receiving a transfer offer from UW–Madison to study Actuarial Science

Sean Lai, from Malaysia, has recently been accepted to the University of Wisconsin—Madison for Spring 2020 as a pre-Business student. As part of the GO:Madison program he studied at Kings at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Fox Cities, taking part in Business Club as the club secretary, volunteering with Junior Achievement of Wisconsin and serving as the President of Phi Theta Kappa. We spoke with Sean about his experience as a GO:Madison student:

Hi Sean, which Kings school are you studying at and what are you studying?

I am studying Actuarial Science at Kings at UWO, Fox Cities.

What made you pursue a college degree in the United States?

I wanted to study in the United States because the education system was very appealing to me. I like how there are multiple ways to earn points in a class and my grade is not based solely off my final exam. The system gives me more opportunities to get involved in my education.

What major are you interested in, and why?

I am interested in Actuarial Science because it involves a lot of problem solving, which I enjoy.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I would like to go to graduate school and eventually become a math professor in the United States.

Why did you choose to study at Kings at UWO, Fox Cities?

For me, I was not confident with my future after high school graduation. I chose to study at Kings at UWO, Fox Cities because the program helped me decide my future path.

What is your favorite class, why do you like it? What class do you find more challenging?

My favorite class was World Regional Geography because I learned many interesting things during this course. The class I found to be the most challenging was Biology because there were many things I had to do to get a good grade.

Have you decided on your target schools? How did Kings staff guide you through the process?

Yes, I have applied to UW-Madison and the University of Rochester. Recently, I have been accepted to Madison as a pre-Business student. My Kings Progression Advisor gave me a checklist that helped me keep track of everything I needed to do to transfer. It was very useful in helping me complete a successful transfer process. My advisor also help me with my application essays. She helped suggest edits that made my essays stronger.

Which student activity did you enjoy the most?

My favorite student activity was volunteering with Junior Achievement of Wisconsin. I worked with our Kings Center Manager to teach economics to elementary school students. It was fun to work with the kids and watch them learn.

What is your favorite part of living in Appleton/Menasha?

My favorite part of living in Menasha is the snow. I enjoy the fun that winter brings.
