My second home after six months in Brighton
Gokhan from Turkey recently studied the Compact Course at Kings Brighton for 6 months. As he prepared to return home, we spoke to him about Brighton, making friends, and improving his English through activities.
What are you studying in Kings?
I have been here for 6 months and I have been studying English. It has been a great pleasure to study here and I really enjoyed it.
Why did you decide to study English?
After my graduation I thought I should improve my English and also I want to get a master's degree in the UK so it is important to improve my English.
Which master's are you hoping to do in the UK?
I graduated from law school so I want to get a master's degree in International Commercial Law at (the University of) Sussex probably. I'm not sure yet.
What made you decide to come to Kings to study English?
Firstly, I chose Brighton, then I had a look at language schools in Brighton and I saw that Kings was the latest one, the new one. I don't know, there is no specific reason. It felt right at the time.
During your 6 months here, where did you stay?
Actually, I stayed everywhere; residence, homestay and private accommodation. All of them have both advantages and disadvantages but I enjoyed all of them because with homestay you can see British culture, British family, how they live. In residence, you are with your friends, it is really convenient, it is really close to school and also in the residence we are like a big family living together. Then in private accommodation you are free to do anything, so all of them have advantages and disadvantages.
Have you taken part in any of the activities or enrichment classes?
Yes, I have taken part in a lot of them especially cooking club, indoor sports, Sunday hikes and craft class. They are really nice because you can not only enjoy them but also improve your English. You can learn new things, for example, when we are in cooking class we can learn cooking vocabulary and at the same time we enjoy ourselves with our friends. The hiking was really nice, we went to really good places so it was really nice to be with your friends, walking together, had fun and at the same time do an activity. The Seven Sisters was beautiful.
Have you made many friends while you were here?
Of course, I have a lot of friends now from different countries and I am sure we will keep in touch and I think it is the most positive thing about being here. I have many friends and met wonderful people.
What do you think of the school's location in Brighton?
I think our school is located in a really good place because it is central but it is not that crowded. We can go anywhere we want easily. It is convenient and we have a park opposite the school and on the side we have London Road which has a lot of shops that we can find anything we want.
Have you spent much time exploring Brighton?
Yes, Brighton is my second home. I really like Brighton. I have been in many cities in the UK and also in Europe but Brighton feels different, I don't know why. It has both attractive and peaceful life at the same time and that is what I want so I am happy to be here.
What would you say to anyone who is considering coming to Kings Brighton?
What should I say... they should come! (Laughing.) Yes, because everyone is friendly. In this school we are like a big family and we are doing activities, taking part in classes but it is not just that, we are hanging out together. We are not strangers to each other so I am happy to be here.
Are you going to come back to visit us?
Of course, I'll be back probably and I will visit.
You could come on another hike with us!
Why not, I would love it.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Actually, I have mixed feelings because I am leaving. I leave my friends here and I feel a little bit blue, sad. At the same time I am going back to my country, I am happy to see my family, my friends, my country and my food so I am excited as well. However, I am still sad — I am really going to miss you, to be here, with all the people!
