Boston Common: a special place to be this Memorial Day weekend

Matthew Ford, Student Services Coordinator, tells us why Boston Common is a particularly great place to spend time this Memorial Day weekend (May 25 – May 29).
Memorial Day is just around the corner, and Boston Common proves it. On this hotspot for pedestrians looking to picnic beneath park trees, the hillside of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument is currently home to over 37,000 miniature American flags that honor the lives of Massachusetts veterans who died serving their country as far back as the Revolutionary War.
Already available for viewing, and capturing the attention of many pedestrians, this sight to behold serves to remind us of the sacrifice that our state's heroes have made over the USA's centuries-long history.
We watch the small flags flitter in the wind this spring, and we recall the myriad lives lost for their state and country.
It sends a powerful message of community support to the families of these fallen heroes that their sacrifices will never be forgotten.
