Learning with the Lords at Kings Oxford

Head of Humanities at Kings Oxford, Tina Banyard, reports back on a special interactive Politics session that took place last month.

Politics students at Kings Oxford recently participated in live Question and Answer sessions with members of the House of Lords through the “Learn with the Lords” Outreach programme. This included a 30-minute (although we managed to extend this to 40) one-to-one Microsoft Teams meeting with the Liberal Democrat Lords Spokesperson on Education — who also sits on the Communications and Digital Committee — Lord Mike Storey, CBE.

Lord Storey began by telling us about his life before the House of Lords as a Headmaster, and his current role as a peer before answering a question from every student. In these turbulent times there was no shortage of topical issues to grill Lord Storey on and questions included “What did he think of the Government’s handling of the Covid crisis?” , “Which should take precedence, protecting Human Rights or combatting the virus?” and “Should Marcus Rashford receive a knighthood for his work on alleviating child poverty?”

At the end of the meeting Lord Story thanked the students for their difficult questions and hoped we would be able to visit Parliament again soon.
