Kings Oxford's Big Day Out in the Heart of the Capital

For students studying at international schools in the UK, exploring London is an experience like no other. Kings Oxford's Media Content Producer, Cordelia Cross, tells us all about their recent trip.

The city’s rich history, diverse culture, and iconic landmarks make it the perfect destination for an unforgettable day trip. On this occasion, we embarked on a walking tour that stopped at some of London’s most famous sights. From Buckingham Palace to Covent Garden, the day was packed fill, with students raring to go and learn more about our capital city. Here’s a recap of our journey!

After being dropped off just outside of Buckingham Palace we walked over to the front gates to take photos, and see the two guards, from here we walked through St. James Park all the way to Royal Horse Guards, where we we’re just in time to see the several members of the mounted cavalry troops do their parade which was very exciting. A short walk brought us to Westminster, where Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament stood tall and majestic. Its intricate Gothic architecture and iconic clock tower, recently restored to its full splendour standing at a whopping 96 meters high! We also took a moment to discuss the significance of this area as a hub of British political life, we took photos by statues of influential leaders like Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela.

From here we headed down the North Bank of the Thames admiring the London Eye on route, unfortunately we didn’t have time to go around it, but students enjoyed capturing photos of this modern marvel, it made a stark and striking contrast to the historic landmarks we’d seen just before. We also stopped via Downing St. showing them No. 10. Next, we arrived at Trafalgar Square, a bustling hub in the heart of London. Students admired Nelson’s Column, flanked by the iconic lion statues. It was also a chance to recharge, grab a bite to eat and soak up the lively atmosphere.

As the afternoon progressed, we walked toward Piccadilly Circus, known for its vibrant billboards. The students marvelled at the hustle and bustle of this intersection, which felt like London’s answer to Times Square. The bright lights, live music and fast-paced energy made it a favourite stop for many in the group. From here to wondered through China Town, a colourful and aromatic enclave filled with restaurants, shops, and cultural charm. The students were thrilled to wander through the lantern-decorated streets, sampling traditional Chinese snacks and admiring the intricate architecture. It was a great opportunity to discuss London’s multicultural identity and how communities from around the world have shaped the city’s character.

Our final stop on the walking tour was Covent Garden, a vibrant area known for its market, street performers, and historic charm. The students enjoyed exploring the market stalls, picking up souvenirs, some general shopping as well as watching talented buskers entertain the large crowds. The lively atmosphere was the perfect way to end our day, leaving everyone with smiles and fond memories. From here we walked over to our coach, everyone shattered from the lively day!

We like to think that the walking tour was more than just a sightseeing trip but an immersive journey through history, culture and community. All in all, it was a wonderful, highly enjoyable day out, thanks to the keen, inquisitive students.
