In focus: English Plus International Business at Kings Bournemouth

The English Plus International Business course is ideal for students who want to combine English language with international business topics such as leadership, finance, advertising and competition. You will develop the skills essential for communicating successfully within the international context of modern business. Here, teacher, Oliver Merton, tells us a bit more about the course.

The course is aimed at students who are considering studying business related subjects at university, undergraduate and post graduate students from various faculties who are interested in understanding more about the business world, right up to senior executives from companies who come for short breaks to improve their English and their ability to better express their work in the English language.

The course, which can last up to 6 months without repetition, covers a wide range of topics, which are delivered on a weekly basis, such as:

  • Marketing
  • Finance
  • Human Resources
  • Leadership
  • Strategy
  • Ethics

At Kings Bournemouth, the course structure is to study English in the mornings from 9.00am –12.30pm Monday – Friday, and to study International Business from 1:30pm to 3:00pm on Monday – Thursday.

On Thursdays, student typically participate in group activities such as giving presentations, participating in negotiations or meetings, all related to the topic of the week.

There are educational visits to outside businesses such as Ringwood Breweries (below, first photo) and the Barclays Digital Eagle lab (below, second photo), which supports the set-up of new businesses.

In English, we have the expression, “the proof of the pudding, is in the eating”. So how do some of our students feel about the course?

Mingyun Cho from South Korea feels the course is helping him to improve his knowledge of different business topics in addition to expanding his vocabulary, understanding of idioms and use of collocations.

Sanghyeok Park, an architect from South Korea really enjoys the Thursday case study, where he gets the chance to work in a team and give a presentation.

Mika Schreiter, a student from Germany enjoys the more challenging topics, such as risk, because he has to try and express his thoughts clearly in English.
