Great festivals to enjoy in Brighton this summer

Brighton really comes alive during the summer, and with so many fantastic festivals to enjoy, it's easy to see why! Here is our pick of some of the best.

1. Brighton Festival (4th – 26th May 2019)

One of Europe's leading arts festivals, Brighton Festival is an annual three-week celebration of music, theatre, dance, circus, art, film, literature, debate, outdoor and family events. It is known for its ambitious and experimental programme, and in recent years has attracted a host of inspiring Guest Directors including British sculptor Anish Kapoor (2009), musician Brian Eno (2010), and British musician and poet Kate Tempest (2017). This year Malian musician and songwriter Rokia Traoré will be at the helm.

2. Brighton Fringe (3rd May – 2nd June 2019)

Brighton Fringe runs at a similar time to Brighton Festival, and one of its main aims is to promote local talent and the arts. The festival is open-access, meaning anyone can take part.

3. Paddle Round the Pier (6th – 7th July 2019)

Paddle Round the Pier is now the largest free charity beach festival in Europe. Held on the seafront, on the lovely Hove Lawns, it features water, street and urban sports, live music, and entertainment.

4. Pride (3rd August 2019)

Brighton is known as a diverse and welcoming city and no event embodies this better than Pride. Attracting tens of thousands of revellers each year, the atmosphere during the parade is fun and lively and will have you dancing in the street! Each year the evening festivities include a 'headline' act, which last year was Britney Spears and this year will be Kylie Minogue.

5. The Great Escape Festival (9th – 11th May 2019)

The Great Escape is a festival for new music, designed to showcase British and international unsigned and up-and-coming artists from a range of genres, including rock, indie, hip-hop, grime and electronic music. Held across a variety of venues around the city, including several in the vicinity of Kings Brighton, The Great Escape offers the chance to see rising stars of the music scene, and mix with industry professionals.

6. Brighton Horse-racing festival (7th – 9th August 2019)

Brighton's racecourse sits at the very top of the city, with a fantastic view across the coast. This beautiful backdrop makes it a great place to spend a few hours, and that, coupled with the excitement of live horse racing will make a day to remember.

7. Fiery Foods Festival (6th – 8th September 2019)

If you're a fan of spicy foods, then this festival is for you! Taking place at the Victoria Gardens, this 2-day chilli festival and exhibition is one of many food and drink related events that Brighton hosts each year.

8. Foodies Festival (4th – 6th May 2019)

Another of Brighton's popular food festivals is the aptly named 'Foodies Festival' — touted as the UK's biggest food festival, it includes workshops, masterclasses, music and of course, lots of food tasting!
