Learning English for my future career

Jackeline from Panama has been studying with us in Boston since December, Here, she shares her experience so far and the reasons behind her decision to learn English.

My name is Jackeline Quintero, and I'm from Chiriquí, Panamá. I’m taking English class at Kings, from December 2020 to July 2021. This is the first time that I’ve taken English classes, and the few things I knew about English were just from listening to music or watching movies/series in English. That’s the reason that this is such a massive challenge for me!

I enjoy learning new things every day in my English class at Kings. This has helped me a lot. Having been here for only 3 months, I am capable of writing, listening and speaking more than when I arrived here. I'm even able to hold a conversation, and I must emphasize that my biggest challenge is speaking. It is something that I'm trying to improve every day because this could be hugely important for my career.

"As a future civil engineer, I know English opens many doors because one of the requirements for most jobs is to be able to speak English. Furthermore, I want to improve my English for my own personal growth because it is an ability that I have always wanted to have."

This will make me happier and prouder of myself. In addition, learning English at this time is so important as it's one of the most widespread languages around the world.

On one hand, Boston is amazing in every way. It has beautiful places such as Fenway Park, Downtown Crossing, Cambridge, Chestnut Hill, and the North End. I feel safe here.

But, on the other hand, the winter weather is extreme in terms of the cold, at least for me because I'm accustomed to a tropical climate. However, I have been able to withstand all of this with a lot of layers of clothing, including long underwear, a coat, hat, high socks and obviously appropriate sneakers–no open-toed shoes!

"I have to say that this is one of the best experiences of my life."

I'm happy to be here because I have the opportunity to meet a lot of people. At the same time, this gives me the chance to grow in many ways, personally and academically. I know that, in all the months that are left, I'm going to continue learning more and more!
