From Kings to the University of Oxford

Olga, from Russia, studied English at Kings Oxford last summer. She’s now returned to the city to begin a Master’s degree in Social Data Science at the University of Oxford. Here, she tells us about her journey to this prestigious university, and her experience there so far.

Hi Olga. Which course did you take at Kings Oxford, and how long did you study for?

At Kings I took the IELTS Preparation course to get ready for my language test before applying to the University of Oxford. I spent approximately 1 and a half months in the summer of 2019 studying at Kings.

How was your experience at Kings Oxford?

Firstly, it was a great experience for me to learn proper English from the wonderful British teachers that I had. Secondly, I met a lot of interesting young people from all over the world. I would say that at Kings I met my first company of friends where everyone is from different part of the world. I learnt a lot of fascinating things about different cultures and countries.

Why did you want to improve your English level?

"My aim was to enter the University of Oxford. I understood that I needed support in my preparation for the exam and decided to come as close to the university as possible."

Can you tell us a little about your journey to the University of Oxford?

I was dreaming about it since my first year of studying at the Lomonosov Moscow State University. My university in Russia is a fantastic place where students get a first-class education. However, I wanted to expand my horizons and to try to study abroad.

"First of all, Oxford attracted me because, of course, I can learn a lot here. Secondly, I admire the culture of this place, I am very inspired by the rich history that Oxford has."

Which course are you taking at the University of Oxford? How is it going so far?

I study Social Data Science at the Oxford Internet Institute. It is currently Week 3 of Michaelmas term and I can say without a doubt that the study is very intense here. Everyday I have breaks only for lunch and dinner and for one hour before bed. However, I enjoy learning and I have been taught to work hard, so I do enjoy it every day! There are many positive aspects, but I would like to note that the organisation of the learning process is at the highest level.

Do you like Oxford as a city? Do you think it’s a good place to live and study?

I adore it! It’s simply perfect for students. All university buildings are very close to each other, it’s very convenient. Moreover, you don’t want to do anything except study because of the weather!

Would you say that your time at Kings Oxford helped you to reach your goals?

Undoubtedly! I have not only improved my language, but I also got to know more about the university. Together with teachers from Kings, we visited a few of the university colleges.

"I am very grateful to the school for its help in achieving my goals!"
