From Kings Boston to Northeastern University

Weiran (Carina) Bai has been studying with Kings in Boston for the last 2 years, firstly on the High School Completion Program and then the GO Program.

After nearly a year of living on campus, she flew back home to China and completed her program online when the pandemic hit in early 2020. In the Spring, Carina will transfer to Northeastern University, Boston — ranked #49 nationally — to major in Economics.

Here, she tells us a bit more about her time at Kings and why she wanted pursue a degree in the US.

Hi Carina. What were your favorite classes and why did you enjoy them?

My favorite class is Math: Statistics and Calculus because the professor is very nice, very patient when explaining the difficult problems to us. And many of my friends have the same class with me so we can discuss problems together in class.

Which classes did you find most challenging? Why was that?

Calculus. Because I learned Algebra in an American high school, I didn't really understand. But Calculus is a must for a Business transfer, so I must learn it. I don't understand Calculus, but Rebecca [teacher] will patiently explain it to me, and my friend will also help me.

How has your experience been studying online?

I am in China now, and the time is different from that in the United States, so I always attend classes in the early hours of the morning, which makes it difficult for me to pay attention. Moreover, due to the time difference, I have many assignments due at different times.

What made you want to study abroad to pursue your degree?

"Educational resources are abundant. The educational system is perfect, the educational methods are humanized and diversified, and the teacher resources are abundant. If students can study and live in the United States at an early age, their world outlook, thinking ability, vision and way of doing things will be changed."

Why did you choose to study with Kings in Boston?

At first, it was recommended by an agent.

"I had never been to Boston before, but after I came I gradually fell in love with it, so all the universities I applied for are in the vicinity of Boston."

After arriving at this school, the teachers were very kind and patiently answered questions. The students are also very kind and take good care of you.

I like Boston very much. The scenery is great.

How did you decide on your target schools? How did Kings staff guide you through the transfer process?

My target school is Northeastern University in Boston. The first reason is that Northeastern University is in Boston. The second reason is that the internship program of this school is very famous, and I can practice what I have learned in this school.

Which schools were you accepted to? What will you major in?

"I got offers from University of Massachusetts—Amherst, Northeastern University, State University of New York (SUNY) — Binghamton, and Ohio State University. My major is Economics."

What are your plans for the future? Do you know what you might like to do after you graduate?

I'm not sure what I want to do, but I want to stay in the United States and apply for a master's degree. I worked as an intern during my undergraduate study in the United States to accumulate experience and prepare for my future work.

What advice would you give to someone considering pursuing a US degree with Kings?

"This year was my happiest time at Kings. I got to know a lot of friends. The most important thing is that teachers care about you, they will give you advice on school transfer, and they are very professional."
