From English to academic studies at Kings London
Franklin Jose Gonzalez Alcantara from Venezuela spent 5 months studying English at Kings London before progressing on to do A-levels at the school. We recently caught up with him to find out about his experience so far.
Hi Franklin. What course are you studying here at Kings?
I'm currently doing A-levels in Business, Economics and Maths.
Why did you choose this course?
Because I want to study in a UK university so that was the best option.
Before you started your course you did an English course with us, right?
Yes, I did an English course for 5 months. I did IELTS at the end and got 6.5.
How is it being an academic student?
It's very different to being an English (EFL) student. I think it's more stressful and it requires more time outside school, but it feels the same because you're in the same building.
Is there one that you're enjoying most?
I'm enjoying Economics and Business most.
How would you describe your experience at Kings London so far? What are the best things about the school?
The study environment is really good and the classes are so small it gives you an opportunity to talk to the teacher and have better relations with them.
Have you joined any clubs and societies yet?
I'm on the Student Council at the moment.
Have you made lots of friends?
Yes, but some were in the EFL department and were only here for one or two months.
How is the experience of being in an international school? Do you like that aspect of things?
Yes, I do because you have the advantage of learning about other countries and cultures. It's really interesting. Also it's good because you're not the only foreigner.
What accommodation are you in?
I'm homestay. They are the best homestay ever! The family are really friendly with me, the food is really good, also the house is really good. Everything is really good. I haven't had any bad things.
Do you feel like you're part of the family?
Yes, I do.
Is London how you imagined it would be and what do you like most about Beckenham?
Obviously we are not in central London — I didn't imagine that the school was here, but I really like it. It's quiet and peaceful here.
What are you most looking forward to in the coming months?
To getting my Maths grade up! My goals in the short term are to improve my grades and focus more.
How does it compare to your previous school in Venezuela?
It's really different. The people are different, the teachers are different, the buildings are different. The classes were much bigger at my previous school. It is way better here.
If someone was thinking of coming to the UK to do A-levels or an English course would you recommend Kings?
Yes I would, it gives you the perfect environment for studying and the teachers are great. The help outside classes is really important too. Also they have perfect places — the library, cafeteria. It's not big here, but that's a good aspect.
