Roque Matos, from Panama, has recently been accepted to the Georgia Institute of Technology (ranked 29 nationally) as well as the University of Wisconsin–Madison (#46) to study Chemical Engineering in Spring 2020. He joined the GO:50 program in Spring 2018 and studied at Kings at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Fox Cities for four semesters, taking part in Engineering Club and serving as the school’s Math, Physics and Chemistry tutor. We spoke with Roque about his experience as a GO:50 student:
Hi Roque, what made you pursue a college degree in the United States?
After high school, I wanted to study in the United States because U.S. universities have a great reputation all over the world.
What major are you interested in, and why?
I am studying Chemical Engineering. For me, this major is a great combination because I really enjoy both Chemistry and Engineering. Engineering is about solving problems and I find problem solving fascinating. I have always enjoyed Chemistry so it made sense for me to choose an engineering degree that focuses on Chemistry. There are also many job opportunities in the engineering field, which is important to me as well.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I am hoping to pursue Optional Practical Training (OPT) in the United States. I am interested in working in the polymer or alternative fuels field. Eventually, I hope to go back to school to get my master’s degree.
Why did you choose to study at Kings at UWO, Fox Cities?
I choose to study at Kings at UWO, Fox Cities because of the transfer agreement to University of Wisconsin Madison.
What is your favorite class, why do you like it?
My favorite class has been Chemistry because I enjoy learning about new concepts and exploring new ideas.
What class do you find more challenging?
The class I found the most challenging was English. Before university, I did not have much experience writing essays. Although English was challenging, it helped me improve my communication skills. I think such knowledge will be helpful for the future.
Have you decided on your target schools? How did Kings staff guide you through the transfer process?
My target schools are Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Delaware, and University of Wisconsin—Madison. So far, I have been accepted to Georgia Institute of Technology to study Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. I am still waiting for the other results.
Kings has been very helpful throughout the transfer process and ultimately made it easier for me to transfer. Kayla, my Kings Progression Advisor, helped me keep track of my application deadlines and helped me understand what I needed to submit to each out of my target schools. She also helped me improve my transfer essays by proofreading them and helping me organize my thoughts.
Which student activity did you enjoy the most?
I have really enjoyed being a part of Engineering Club. It helped me practice my engineering skills outside of the classroom and learn engineering terms in English. It was also an excellent way for me to build my student profile, as I was able to help write academic papers and give presentations about our projects in Engineering Club.
What is your favorite part of living in Menasha?
My favorite part of living in Menasha has been making friends from all different backgrounds.
