Achieving transfer success at Kings New York
Which Kings school are you studying at and what are you studying?
I am studying with Kings in New York. I am a Business Major at Concordia.
What made you pursue a college degree in America?
The exchange program that I did in High School had a significant influence. Also, it's to perfect my English proficiency and possibly pave the way to a job in the U.S. in the future.
What major are you interested in, and why?
I am most interested in either Hospitality or Business. Hospitality has a strong connection to what my father does, and I was influenced by the business that he runs. Business is just part of that, the foundation. I am very interested in the Marketing aspect of Business programs. I think Marketing is a really important component of Business and it directly contributes to the success of a company.
What are your plans after graduation?
I definitely have to go back to Taiwan to finish my military service. I would really love to do OPT, but I am not sure if I can do both. Once I go back to Taiwan and do the military service, I will have to see about my OPT.
Why did you choose to study at Kings New York?
To be honest, I first chose Rider, but it didn't work out. Kings was very generous to allow me to come here. It is close to NY and also close to Pennsylvania, where I did my exchange program. I thought it was pretty cool, and I am happy I ended up here.
What is your favorite class, and which class do you find more challenging?
My favorite class would be Financial and Managerial Accounting as well as Principles of Marketing. I was able to get an idea of how Business courses would be and get a head start before I transferred to another institution. For me, COM100 (ENG110) was the most challenging course, it was very writing intensive. I never took a course that required so much writing. At that time, my English was still developing, and I was improving my proficiency. The class contributed a lot towards that objective, so it was rewarding, even though it was a challenge.
Have you decided on your target schools? How did Kings staff guide you through the process?
So far, I have offers to Boston University and the University of Rochester currently. Kings helped with researching the school, preparation of documents, tests, course schedules and a lot of advice from my advisor.
Have there been any difficulties with classes or life in general?
I was an exchange student back in high school. I had already been in the U.S. a year prior to coming to Kings New York, so there wasn’t culture shock. But the environment is definitely different from high school.
Which student activity have you enjoyed the most?
I remember going on a ski trip with other Kings New York students. When I was the President of the International Club, I also held an apple picking event that I thought was really fun. It was the first time for many students to have that experience, and I was happy to be involved in their first experience.
What is your favorite part of living in New York?
New York is a fun city. You are connected to the whole world whenever you go to New York. There is way too much stuff to do in New York. You can never be done with New York City, there’s always something new to experience.
Is there anything you wish you'd prepared before starting school?
English is a big part of it. I've been studying English since elementary school, but especially the writing part, if I had started writing earlier, I may have found my COM course to be easier.
