To round off Induction Week for our new academic students at Kings Oxford, we organised a whole-school river cruise; the perfect way to spend a Friday evening.
With over 110 students and staff, we assembled at the Head of the River with its views of Folly Bridge. The calm, glistening water served as the perfect launch point. As we embarked on our journey down the River Thames, staff were just as eager as the students, having planned the trip to offer everyone a chance to unwind and soak in Oxford’s natural beauty.
As we left the busier parts of the Thames near Folly Bridge, the mood became more tranquil. Trees began to line the riverbanks, and the historical buildings of Oxford slowly receded into the distance, giving way to lush greenery. The river meandered peacefully, flanked by wide meadows on one side and paths with joggers and cyclists on the other. Ducks and swans glided alongside us as we headed down the river with the occasional rower from Oxford’s famous boathouses that sped past us; one even performed a trick for us all, and we watched in awe as he rotated his canoe 360 degrees, submersing himself underwater!
A whole school trip meant one thing: connection. Students from different years - including some of our EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students who chose to join us - were able to mingle and get to know one another and forge new friendships.
As the boat moved steadily along the river, there was music and dancing with some students spontaneously singing and enjoying the atmosphere. We were blessed with beautiful weather, with a spectacular golden sunset. The trip was a reminder of the importance of slowing down, and taking in the beauty around us, and of the strength of our school community.
We docked back at the Head of the River at around 8pm, the evening air cool and crisp, bellies full of fish and chips we’d had aboard the boat earlier, now ready to kickstart the weekend! All in all, it was a wonderful evening, and enjoyed by all. We hope to continue this whole-school event for next year's academic arrivals!
