A great location for studying Business Management
9 April, 2019
Kings Pathways student Brandon Maung Win, from Myanmar, is in the second year of his degree at Marymount California University. He tells us about his future goals and why living and studying in California suits him.
What are you currently studying?
I am studying Business Management at Marymount California University.
What made you want to study abroad to pursue your degree?
I wanted to study Business in the US. I was in New York in the past and really enjoyed my time so I wanted to live and study here. In the future, I would like to go back to Myanmar to run a family business.
What are your plans or goals at the moment?
My goal is to finish college and going back to Myanmar to work. I would like to transfer to universities in Los Angeles area such as Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount University, and so on. After getting a few years of experience, I want to come back for graduate school to get MBA degree.
Why did you choose to study at Kings Marymount?
I think studying at Kings is a good stepping stone for me, and ultimately to transfer to other good universities. I would say the location and also the weather made me want to study in LA. I'm an outdoor person, so California is perfect for me.
What are your favorite classes, why do you like them?
Business courses here are actually really good. I took Microeconomics and Intro to Business, which has business management elements in it. Right now, I'm taking a course called Corporate Finance and that's something I'm really interested in. There is a lot of analyzing and I think it will help me a lot in the future.
What class do you find more challenging, and why?
I'm taking Managerial Accounting this semester but it's work-intensive so more challenging than other classes.
Which student activity did you enjoy the most?
I really enjoy playing golf. It's not necessarily student activity but I would like to stay in shape as well, so I go to a gym nearby.
What do you usually do for fun during your free time?
I volunteer and do community work. I also like doing outdoor activities, such as going up to Big Bear [Mountain Ski Resort] to ski and going to the beach to surf.
What is your favorite part of living in Los Angeles/ Long Beach/ Palos Verdes?
I get the best of both worlds, I can ski in the snow and surf on the same day. I really like the city's vibe. PV is an upscale area, so you feel safe, and people that I meet are well-mannered.
Is there anything you wish you'd prepared before starting school?
It would be great to mentally prepare yourself for the new lifestyle. You're on your own and you need to learn how to manage your money and time, go to class, stay healthy, and so on.
