Accepted to George Washington University after studying English in New Jersey

21 March, 2018

Nicolas Najera, from Ecuador, studied at Kings New Jersey for six months, in preparation for entering university in the USA. He spoke to Campus Support Coordinator Chihae Lee about his experience as a student on the campus of Rider University.

How long have you been at Kings and what course are you taking?
I have been studying at Kings New Jersey for 6 months in the Intensive English language program. I was also able to audit a Rider University class on Legal Studies and Business Ethics.

What do you enjoy most about your lessons?
I enjoyed the vocabulary games and other fun games that we played in Amy, Judy, and Felipe's class. I liked how we learned but had fun at the same time.

Why did you decide to take this course? Do you have specific plans which require English skills?
I wanted to see what it is like to live alone in an American university. This August, I will be starting university at George Washington University in Washington D.C. so it's preparing me for university life.

What made you choose Kings over another language school?
I saw another institution in Miami, Florida but I preferred Kings New Jersey because it’s on the campus of Rider University.

Are you enjoying your experience, and what have been the highlights?
I enjoyed my experience and my highlights were probably the events hosted by Kings and Rider University. I especially like bowling with our dormitory, Centennial House, and most recently ice skating with Rider International Student Association (RISA).

Had you been to New Jersey before? What do you like most about it?
I've only been to New Jersey in passing, but I like Princeton the most because it's a university town. Princeton is the best part of New Jersey. The infrastructure of Princeton is old but resembles an old-fashioned university town.

Where have you been staying? Would you recommend it?
I live in Centennial House residence hall on Rider University. I recommend living on campus because it's much better and you are able to interact with other students. It makes you have real connections with real friends and you are able to make good friends on campus.

What do you think of the facilities at Kings New Jersey?
The facilities are very good at Rider University. The gym is high quality with ping-pong, billiards, weight-room, basketball court, and PS3/Xbox game stations. You can do a lot of stuff at the Student Recreation Center.

What country were your friends and classmates from?
I made friends from the U.S., Brazil, Italy, Turkey, Korea, China, and Japan.

How did you prepare for entering university in the U.S. and what other universities did you apply to?
I took the TOEFL test after 2 months of living in New Jersey. I got a score of 92. I also took the SAT test after 3 months living in New Jersey. I took a private SAT class that was located right next to Rider University. Classes were in the evenings and it really prepared me for the SAT test. I scored 1150 on the test.

I received acceptance letters from George Washington University and Illinois Institute of Technology. I'm still waiting to hear back from Boston University, Catholic University of America, Penn State University, Purdue University, and Virginia Tech University.
