Bringing host families together at Kings Brighton
12 December, 2017
On 30 November, Kings Brighton held a welcome event at the school for their homestay hosts. Accommodation Officer Annika Lewis, who organised the afternoon, tells us how it went.
We arranged this event to say thank you to our hosts for such a successful start to hosting Kings Brighton students, as well as to give them the opportunity to see the school and meet the team. The afternoon included:
- Tour of the school and residence
- The chance to meet some of our staff:
- John Murphy, Enrichment Coordinator
- Sofia Huang, Student Services Officer
- Edit Blahut, Student Services/Receptionist
- Sara Foster, College Services Manager
- Marc Benier, Head of Academic
- Stephen Pilton, Head of English
- Bernadette Gueumani and Betty Kis, Finance
- Chance to see some of our enrichment activities in action, including the cooking club
- Afternoon tea and refreshments
- A goody bag to take away
The hosts had a lovely time speaking to staff members about the school and their roles. They also enjoyed chatting to other hosts and sharing their experiences.
It was also a good opportunity for me to meet the hosts who were visited and recruited before I started working at Kings. I speak to them very regularly so it was great to put a face to the name!
One of our homestay hosts, Liz Baxter, said:
"It was such a lovely afternoon, everyone so warm and friendly. Well done for all your efforts that have gone toward establishing such an impressive school and for entertaining such an enlightening host event. Such a bright, inspiring environment for students to work in!
Thank you too for all you do in organising the student home stays. All my students have been such great kids, I'm loving it! It was so good to also meet other hosts who have been doing this for years!"
Host Ramya Perera commented:
"Thank you for the successful and enjoyable evening, the tour was excellent. Inside the College and accommodation was in very good order, well-balanced and very up-to-date, covers all the criteria and matched with all culture issues, and respect for each other.
I noticed students are confident and relaxed — they were happy in cookery class, friendly, mingling with each other happy and working as a team. Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, and happy to answer any questions.
Very safe place for students. I am sure students have first class education and their future will be very bright. Staff work very hard to match with each individual's needs. Found a warm atmosphere and peace. I am proud to become a host for Kings."
