2 minutes with... Stella Guarnieri, Kings New York
Stella Guarnieri joined Kings New York as a teacher in October 2018, and has since been promoted to an Academic Affairs Manager position where she supports the students and other teachers in all academic aspects.
Stella has a Master of Science in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Fordham University, where she also received her BA in Information Systems. She additionally has a masters degree in Managing Technology from Brooklyn Polytechnic, which is now a part of NYU.
Before teaching, Stella worked in the field of technology for twenty years, working in a variety of roles managing internal technology and operations, with team members located in NY, around Europe and in Australia. Even with a role primarily focused on technology, she spent part of her time creating and teaching classes in communication and other topics for her teams and other members of the technology group.
Stella is originally from Brooklyn, NY and has lived in nearby Eastchester for the past twenty-one years. She enjoys living in the suburbs but being close to NYC culture. Her passions are gardening, cooking, theater and spending time with family and friends. She can often be seen walking or biking around the neighborhood.
1. What do you do at Kings?
Since the beginning of this year I am the NY Academic Affairs Manager.
2. How long have you worked at Kings and what did you do before?
I started with Kings in October, 2018 as a teacher. Prior to teaching I was in the technology field for twenty-plus years.
3. What do you enjoy most about your job?
Kings NY has a great environment, everyone is friendly and helpful. It is wonderful to watch the students develop and form friendships and become interested in other cultures. I enjoy the challenge of meeting the individual needs of our students.
4. What do you like most about living in New York?
I have always lived in NY. I am originally from Brooklyn and attended college in Manhattan. I enjoy living in a quiet suburban environment with a backyard vegetable garden, and being close enough to enjoy NYC culture. I love live theater and music and there is always something to see or hear in NYC. NYC also has amazing parks and gardens.
5. Where is the best place you’ve visited?
I loved being in Hawaii for the natural surroundings. I was fascinated by the architecture in Venice.
6. What is the last book you read?
I am currently reading The Water Dancer and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
7. What is your favorite film?
Casablanca along with a myriad of Disney films.
8. What would be your ideal character to play in a film?
Mary Poppins - also a favorite film – I love that she is both practical and magical
9. Which well-known figure would you most like to invite to dinner?
Ruth Bader Ginsburg – she has lived an amazing life and I am in awe of her ability to overcome adversity.
