Role description

Working as part of the IT Team and reporting to the IT Service Manager, the IT Support Technician will provide first line support to all staff, teachers, students and visitors, supporting both Windows PCs/laptops and Apple machines as well as interactive whiteboards, printers and other audio-visual equipment.

In addition, the IT Support Technician will be a member of staff within the Oxford school, and work very closely with colleagues, in particular the College Services Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities

These include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide hardware and software support for workstation PCs, laptops, printers, tablets and mobile devices
  • Build/rebuild and provision desktop or laptop computers as needed and maintain the Asset Register
  • Maintain and troubleshoot the Apple Mac environment, iMacs, iPads and other Apple Products
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to teachers, administrative staff and students
  • Support and promote the use of Corporate Policies, including Acceptable Use and E-Safety
  • Install and support use of approved software including Corporate Applications
  • Assist in set-up and maintenance of audio and visual equipment, including whiteboards, televisions, audio systems and projectors across the sites
  • Support and maintain of CCTV, telephony and printing systems
  • Perform maintenance and troubleshooting of wired and wireless networks
  • Maintain the IT inventory
  • Provide technical advice, research and procure products, as required
  • Advise the Infrastructure and IT Service Manager on technical issues
  • Induct new students and staff into the use of IT at Kings
  • Management and support of student and staff accounts
  • Set up computer rooms for examinations

Work conditions

This post is located at Kings Oxford, St Joseph’s Hall, Temple Road, with regular travel to the other Kings Oxford City Centre sites. It will involve:

  • Sitting at a desk for extended periods of time
  • A substantial amount of work involving visual display units
  • Lifting and transporting of moderately heavy objects, such as computers and peripherals
  • Occasional inspection of cables in floors and ceilings

Applicants must be able to demonstrate:

Professional experience:

  • Familiarity with Enterprise level hardware (PCs, Macs, printers, servers’ routers, switches, cabling) in a corporate or school environment
  • Experience of Microsoft Operating systems (Windows 10) in a networked environment
  • Familiarity with common off-the-shelf-commercial software (e.g. Microsoft Office 365 and Adobe Acrobat)
  • Experience with Windows server administration
  • Experience of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, NTFS Permissions and Group Policies
  • Knowledge of current IT legislation and compliance

Formal qualifications:

  • Educated to GCSE level with good literacy and numeracy (GCSE Maths and English)
  • A relevant IT technical qualification from an accredited provider

Personal attributes:

  • Energy, patience and empathy are essential, along with a good work ethic and dependability.
  • You will be amiable, and approachable, with an authoritative yet friendly demeanour.
  • The ability to use your initiative, be pro-active, multitask and prioritise, along with a good attitude towards team work is vital.

Desirable attributes include:

  • A good understanding of IT security
  • Hands-on experience of VLANs
  • Using the Microsoft 365 admin portal
  • Exchange online
  • Using and administering Teams
  • Providing remote support
