Role Description

The Director of Studies, Academic & EFL Programmes, has overall responsibility for managing the Learning & Teaching across the college.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assume overall responsibility for day to day management of the Academic and EFL Departments
  • Together with the Principal assume responsibility for the recruitment of teaching staff
  • Line manage Academic & EFL Administrators
  • Allocate staff to appropriate courses; organise teaching groups at the start of the year and monitor them throughout the year
  • Oversee the preparation and management of the department timetables with support from senior colleagues
  • Ensure that subject teachers fulfil the requirements of their job descriptions and ensure effective co-operation, collaboration and communication between teachers
  • Ensure that teachers complete school monitoring, recording and reporting requirements to a high standard
  • Support the continuing professional development of all teaching staff
  • Assist in the development of the aims, policies and administrative procedures of the college and ensure that these are implemented through the work of teachers
  • Identify and recommend appropriate resources for the delivery of academic subjects and EFL to the departments
  • Be available to teachers and be able to offer advice, guidance and support
  • Monitor appraisal of teachers by Assistant Director of Studies
  • Encourage the professional development of teachers by directing them to attend appropriate INSET and examination board training days, and attending such training courses
  • Ensure a professional standard of teaching and learning is upheld through the monitoring of lesson planning and through lesson observations
  • Assess prospective student applications to the academic department in a timely manner
  • Receive agent visits to the college
  • Advise designated students on university options as part of the UCAS counselling process and ensure that the UCAS provision is effective
  • Ensure the IELTS policy and procedures are implemented
  • Ensure that the implementation of the Tutor System is robust
  • Prepare and lead the Academic department for British Council and Ofsted inspections

It is understood that this list is not exhaustive and that the Director of Studies’ duties are likely to change and develop with experience and with the changing needs of the college.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate:

Professional experience

  • Be a successful manager of academic courses including GCSE, A Level and university preparation foundation programmes
  • Be a highly efficient administrator with good IT skills
  • Have excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Have a clear understanding of the commercial demands of working for a private independent school whose students are predominantly recruited from overseas
  • Be a fully qualified subject specialist with considerable teaching experience

Personal attributes

  • Be calm working in demanding situations and retain a healthy sense of humour when operating in challenging timeframes
  • Have excellent people skills and the ability to motivate those being line-managed
  • Be experienced at dealing with partners from overseas whose first language is not English

Desirable attributes include:

  • Ideally have worked overseas and have a good command of at least one language other than English
