We interviewed Kings New Jersey teacher Amy Ballard to find out about her role and life in New Jersey.
What do you do at Kings?
I am a teacher for the Level 4 UPP program. I teach reading and writing.
How long have you worked at Kings and what did you do before?
I have worked at Kings since October 2016. Before, I taught English in Philadelphia and worked on my Master of Education degree. I have also worked a Spanish teacher, interpreter, and social worker.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love seeing my students discover their own ability to write! They work hard in my class to produce essays and research papers, and they leave with a great sense of accomplishment. I also love seeing them gain knowledge from new readings and connecting it to their own life experience through questions and conversations.
What do you like most about New Jersey/ Lawrenceville?
I love this area! There are so many cute restaurants, fun shops, and beautiful buildings. I feel like the people here are always learning and growing, whether in community classes or at one of the many local universities. There are always fun activities and events to enjoy in the local parks.
Where is the best place you've visited?
In New Jersey, I love the Princeton University Chapel and the Institute Woods. In the world, I adore Florence, Italy. Both places have great buildings, landscapes, food, and culture.
What is the last book you read?
The last book I read was Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. It is about her experience of growing all her own food for one year. I learned a lot about food quality, gardening, and the excitement of living on a farm!
What is your favourite film?
My favorite movie is Chef, which is a story about a famous cook who travels around the United States in a food truck. I love cooking and eating new foods, so this is a fun film to watch and learn from.
Who would play you in a film of your life?
Definitely Ellen Page from Juno. I think we look similar, but she is much sassier. She would do a great job.
Which well-known figure would you most like to invite to dinner?
I would love to have dinner with Michelle Obama. She's an inspiration to women everywhere!
What is your favourite quote?
My friend Sherrie used to tell me, "Never underestimate the power of a deep breath." I keep this in mind whenever I feel stressed, and it helps me to remember to breathe and relax.
