Two minutes with... Vanessa Zuidema
15 July, 2017
In our two-minute staff interview we meet Kings New York Center Director Vanessa Zuidema.
What do you do at Kings?
I am the Center Director at Kings New York. I work closely with our Academic and Operations teams on-site to provide the best experience for our students. I am also focused on building a strong partnership with Concordia College that provides a welcoming, friendly atmosphere where students can thrive academically, personally, and socially.
How long have you worked at Kings and what did you do before?
I joined Kings in the spring of 2017. Prior to Kings, I worked for other English schools managing operations at New York centers. My career before entering the International Education sector spanned translation services and consultant work for non-profits.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love watching things improve. Whether it's a student achieving his or her academic goals or a team member growing in their respective roles. And of course I love learning about new cultures and languages, which is what drew me into this work.
What do you like most about New York?
We have the best food in the world!
Where is the best place you've visited?
South Africa was a country that left a huge impression on me. The people are so welcoming, the culture so rich, and the landscapes are beautiful!
What is the last book you read?
Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty — it's a fun read with some good moral lessons.
What is your favourite film?
Last of the Mohicans.
Who would play you in a film of your life?
No idea! Maybe Sarah Silverman.
Which well-known figure would you most like to invite to dinner?
Margaret Atwood. She's an author probably most famous for The Handmaid's Tale. Her writing is incredible and I'd love to learn how she develops a story.
What is your favourite quote?
"There's no success like failure and failure's no success at all." - Bob Dylan
